He trained in sociology and cultural studies, doing his PhD with Professor Stuart Hall in the Department of Sociology at the Open University. For the past twenty years he has researched on the links between consumer culture, cultural representation and social change, publishing four books. These include ‘Hard Looks: Masculinities, Spectatorship and Contemporary Consumption’ (UCL Press, 1996) and ‘Advertising Cultures: Gender, Commerce, Creativity’ (Sage, 2003). His new book, ‘Hard Sell’, explores Anglo-American advertising relations and the wider ‘commercial Atlantic’ between 1951 and 1969 and is published by MUP
